Exclusive Interview: Olympic Swimmer Ryan Murphy on Training, Recovery, and Preparation for Paris 2024

I'm excited to have a 4-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer, Ryan Murphy, walk us through his rigorous performance training and recovery routine.

Ryan’s up at 5:15 a.m. for a swim practice from 6-7:45 a.m., then rests and refuels before hitting the weight room at 12:45 p.m. After weights, he gets in the pool again from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

Even for an elite athlete, it's a demanding schedule, but the prehab and recovery routine is unique.

Staying injury-free while operating at peak performance is the key.

An essential tool he uses is NueX - an interactive neuromuscular stimulation device. He uses the "neuro reboot" setting to help relax his nervous system after hard sessions. Ryan says he felt the relaxing effects immediately, and his body has improved after recovering over time using NeuX.

Besides recovery, Ryan uses NueX to activate and strengthen muscles, gain shoulder mobility and rotation, and stabilize his core. He shared specifics on his go-to core exercises with NueX diagonal pad placements to mimic his swimming stroke's rotational motion.
It was fascinating to hear Ryan detail how he tracks detailed sleep metrics and other biomarkers to optimize training. He emphasizes sleep as critical for recovery and overtraining prevention. The fact that NueX helps raise his heart rate variability score shows how it aids his recovery at a neurological level.

With the Paris Olympics on the horizon, Ryan is laser-focused on finding any small gain to elevate his performance. NueX and dialing in his recovery are essential tools that are helping him in that quest.

We can all learn a lot from how this Olympic athlete takes his training to the highest levels.
